The Poker Priest

Meet the “Poker Priest,” Fr. Andrew Trapp.

THE STORY …

Fr. Andrew is a parish priest at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Beaufort SC. He’s also an expert poker player. In fact, Fr. Andrew appeared on TV just a few years ago in a million dollar poker contest — and he almost won it! While he didn’t get the grand prize, he did win $100,000. And he won something more important too!

“Three Aces, A King, and a Queen” (at the bottom of this page) tells his engaging story in rhyme. It also reveals what Fr. Andrew did with the cash he won and even suggests what his real winnings turned out to be.

MORE INFORMATION …

Before you read “Three Aces, A King, and a Queen,” we have two videos to share with you. The first is a video from the poker contest when he won $100,000. The second is Fr. Andrew with parishioners at a previous parish.

FR. ANDREW WINNING A POKER CONTEST …

FR. ANDREW AT WORK ON THE BIG PRIZE …

THREE ACES, A KING, AND A QUEEN” …

Once upon a time, not long ago,
In a land called the Bible Belt,
A young man set out to win many souls,
Playing only the hand he was dealt.

“Three aces! A king! A queen, as well!
It’s all I should ever require.
To answer God’s call and lead many souls
Away from the tricks of The Liar.”

The Poker Priest, as he came to be known,
Rode out of Aiken his home.
To Clemson he went and seminary too,
His poker skills still to be honed.

“Three aces! A king! A queen, as well!
It’s all I should ever require
To answer God’s call and lead many souls
From hell’s great torment and fire!”

A priest he became, a man of God’s word,
Breaking bread and dealing with sin.
All the while, he prepared to sit at the table,
And say, “Deal them. This priest is all in!”

“Three aces! A king! A queen, as well!
It’s all I should ever require.
To answer God’s call and lead many souls
Is the purpose to which I aspire.

The day finally came. It was off to L.A.!
Fr. Andrew would show them his stuff.
One million dollars the grand prize would be
Could this priest really be good enough?

“Three aces! A king! A queen, as well!
They’ll take me where I must go
To answer God’s call and teach all those souls
Jesus! He’s the One they must follow.”

One by one, the players they fell
Until only two were left.
Athletes and stars, the table had claimed
It was down to the priest and the best!

Three aces! A king! A queen, as well!
Would they really be good enough?
With so much at stake, this was not the right time,
For a young priest from Aiken to bluff!

Alas! Dear Andrew had met his match.
Sent home to the souls he did love.
A hundred thousand the priest he did win,
Giving all to His Lord above!

Three aces! A king! A queen, as well!
With this hand he would never fold.
He answered God’s call, no fortune he sought,
But the prize of a million souls!

IN CLOSING …

Fr. Andrew is exactly what we would hope and expect a priest to be — but not in the way most of us might have expected.

“Now that was cool! Catholic Cool!”

In Christ!
